Rocket 1.4
👯♂️ This is a huuuge update to Rocket 👯♂️
Emoji Bullet List 💯
Use this to create emojified bullet point lists that’ll make your presentations, documents, and standup updates all a little more ✨. Get to it from the Rocket menu bar icon—it’s free for everyone.
Fun Stats for Pro Users 📊
Take a look at your Fun Stats to see some beautiful charts on how many emoji you’ve used, your top emoji, how many emoji you’ve ignored (😢), and more!
Send me your stats! (to @_matthewpalmer) I don't collect any real usage data (I feel like that’d be super creepy) so I'd love to see your stats. The best I've seen so far is like 3,000 emoji used 📈.
Better, Faster Shortcut Search ⚡
I’ve improved the “:thu”-style shortcut search so that searching matches from the ‘-’ in a shortcut. This makes it faster and easier to drill down to the exact emoji you want, rather than having to wade through the 300 options given to you by the old fuzzy search mechanism. Let me know what you think via the Feedback tab though!
Better Browse & Search 🔎
- You can now see the whole 🌈 of skin tones when you choose an emoji in the Browse & Search window—even if you don’t have the preference tweaked! Double click one of these to quickly copy it to your clipboard.
- You can set a keyboard shortcut to quickly open the Browse and Search window. Do this from Preferences > Advanced 💥
And more
- Fixed an issue where some skin tone variations on an emoji wouldn’t appear in the Shortcut Search if you had that preference set
- Fixed links to my help pages, and improved my help pages in case Rocket stops working or you need to disable VSCode
Tweaked some text around the app to be a little clearer
New emoji day!! 🎉🎉🎉
- This version of Rocket adds the new emoji from Emoji 5.0 for people on macOS High Sierra 10.13.1+
- It also adds the ability to bulk delete emojis and gifs in the Browse & Search window—just select the items you want to delete and then right-click and choose Delete
New emoji 🧡
My personal favourites include 🤮 (:vomit:), 🤨 (:raised-eyebrow:), 🧙 (:mage:), 🧘♂️ (:yoga:), and 🦒 (:giraffe:).
There are also two new contenders for the cutest-emoji-of-all-time-award 🦖 (:t-rex:) and 🦕 (:sauropod:)… Pro users might want to add a custom shortcut for that last dinosaur 🤪
🤫🧐🤩 — I’m excited, friends.
-
Improved disabled apps picker in Preferences
This version adds a new native app picker to disable Rocket for certain apps more smoothly, and you can now add and remove many apps at a time. It also makes "whitelisting" Rocket for only a small number of apps a lot easier.
-
Search by emoji in the Browse & Search window
Sometimes you know the emoji you want but you don't know what the shortcut is. Now you can search by emoji in the Browse & Search window.
-
Reliability and bug fixes
Rocket's triggering has been refined to be a bit more consistent, the Browse & Search UI has been improved, and other small bug fixes.
In the new version of Rocket, we sand off some rough edges, add a new setup guide for people using Rocket for the first time, and improve Rocket's performance.
In more detail
- Add a new onboarding flow for people that haven't got Rocket's accessibility setting enabled
- Add an Advanced preference item about hiding Rocket's menu bar icon
- Add the ability to click on quick search results to insert emoji
Pro features
- Double click on emoji in the full Search & Browse window to copy to your clipboard
- Use keyboard shortcuts to close Rocket's Preferences and Search & Browse windows
- Improve scrolling performance in the Search & Browse window
- Fix some memory leaks in Rocket's core and the Search & Browse window
I added some new features to Rocket:
-
Added the ability to start Rocket at login
-
Added fuzzy search for shortcuts, so now if you type ":check" you’ll get ✅, ☑️, as well as the not-so-useful 🏁
-
Added the ability to deactivate Rocket on specific websites that already have an emoji picker, like Trello and Github
- Allow users to override Rocket’s language to be different from the system default
Plus, a couple of bug fixes:
French Translation
🚀 + 🇫🇷
This version of Rocket adds French localization, including translating Rocket's 2,000+ emoji names, shortcuts, and search keywords.
Huge thanks to Reinald Freling who did this amazing translation work. You should absolutely follow him on Twitter @rfreling or check out his website at putcocoa.in. This is one of the most generous things anyone could do to support Rocket—take a look at Reinald’s work and send him some good karma.
My favourite thing about Rocket is the people who use it. Thanks to you all, and special thanks to Reinald.
This version of Rocket adds new emoji, boosts the Search & Browse window, and fixes bugs for Dvorak keyboard layouts.
Full details below:
- Adds Unicode 9 emoji for people on macOS 10.12.2+. Take a look at :avocado: and :clown: or browse through all your emoji in the Search & Browse window
- Adds the ability to edit and delete existing shortcuts
- You can now delete emoji and gifs from Rocket
- You can now copy and paste emoji from the Search & Browse window into other apps
- Fixes an issue where people using Dvorak keyboard layouts wouldn't be able to paste emoji
This is a quick update to Rocket that'll fix a few small bugs
- Fixes an issue where adding custom gifs might crash
- More graceful handling of empty sections in the Search & Browse window (where "more graceful" means not crashing after you click them...)
Thanks so much for using Rocket!
All-new Emoji Browser!
With Search!
This version of Rocket adds a brand new emoji browser that you can use to search for emoji, add your own shortcuts, add custom gifs, and scroll through every emoji under the sun.
This version of Rocket also got a big internal upgrade as well, which should make adding new emoji a lot easier in the future (looking at you, :avocado:). Stay tuned.
Oh and by the way, you can now set your preferred skin tone for Rocket. Head over to Preferences to change that.
Thanks very much, and special thanks to everyone who buys a license for Rocket—it makes a huge difference!
Thanks for sending in your bug reports and feature requests! Here's a little update to fix some bugs.
- Fixes issues with Rocket's window positioning for full screen apps on secondary displays
- Fixes handling for Command-A and other keyboard shortcuts so Rocket now deactivates properly
Now off to work on new features…
This version of Rocket focuses macOS Sierra updates and improving some small glitches in the core experience.
- Fix bugs when using Rocket with multiple monitors (let me know if you spot any more though!)
- Prevent Rocket from activating when typing times like "9:41am"
- Add handling for key combinations like page up and page down that can't be displayed
- Fixed bugs with deactivated applications, and added new default deactivations for iTerm and Sublime Text
- Update for macOS Sierra and fix related bugs
Thanks to everyone who has been sending in feedback and suggestions! I'm currently planning out the next few releases of Rocket, so if you have any other suggestions now is a great time to send them through.
This release focuses on improving the main emoji completion window.
- stops the emoji list from going off the screen when you're typing near the bottom!
- adds a neat little triangle that points at the insertion point
- improves performance for large lists of emoji
- stop Rocket from polluting your clipboard manager's history if you're using one
- improve the display of long custom emoji strings (multi-emoji strings are a cool thing you can do with custom emoji by the way)
- This update lays the groundwork for a better upgrade experience, including a beta program. If you’d like to be included on beta releases you can toggle this in the app’s preferences (note that in the future this might be restricted to upgraded users only)
- Fixes a bug that would incorrectly cause a crash when the app quit
- Removes the website-specific disabling introduced in the last version (for performance and weird bugs reasons)
Thanks for tweeting and sending in your feedback! This release addresses some of the minor UI glitches and a few other bugs.
- Disable for specific websites that have their own emoji pickers in Chrome and Safari—namely, Github.
- Remove the "Open automatically at login" feature. This never worked—the checkbox was a lie!
- Fix the button alignment across the "Custom GIFs" and "Custom emoji" preference tabs
- Fix some copy and title case issues throughout the preferences window
- Make deleting the phrase after you select an emoji more reliable (there were instances where the word previous would accidentally get deleted)
- The help menu option now links to our support website instead of an empty help document
This release focuses on improving the way Rocket is triggered and activated.
Important note: as part of this improvement we needed to reset your custom trigger key. Please set this up again through the app's preferences. Thank you!
- A faster, more reliable way of observing trigger keys (so if you were getting annoyed at typing colon-then-space and Rocket accidentally turning it into space-then-colon this fixes that)
- A new way of setting trigger keys that is simpler and more flexible
- Fixes issues around not being able to type in the preferences and feedback windows in some situations
- You can now use Rocket in the preferences when adding a custom emoji, and you can use Rocket when sending me feedback (thanks for sending me feedback—it helped to drive the direction of this release!)
Thanks to everyone sending in feedback for Rocket—keep it coming!
- Add a potential fix for an issue where editing the disable apps list would not work
- Fix the application name in the main menu
- Fix handling of arrow keys in emoji completion
- Fix UI bugs when adding custom emoji
- Fix handling of presses of the tab key
- Fix window titles and introduce proper casing
Thanks to everyone who has been sending feedback via Twitter and the in-app menu—much appreciated!
- Fix UI bugs around the licensing screens
- Enable copy and paste in preferences
The store to upgrade for custom gifs and emoji should become available soon.
Thanks for sending in your feedback via Twitter and the in-app feedback screen—keep it coming!
